Who Is Hektor?

I made my way through a dark corridor, my only source of light coming from a lighter. The flame of the lighter could illuminate just the area a few feet around me. As I turned the corner I found myself face to face with a conclusion; I had just gone down this exact hallway to get here. As I played Hektor, an indie horror game, it sent chills down my spine. It made me question what deep secrets were behind every door as I made my way through puzzles and discovered what was really going on in the terrifying maze where I was trapped.

(Trapped with only a lighter to guide me through the darkness)

It all began with some crazy doctor, or who I could only assume was one, mentioning some nonsense about “putting you back together,” and how his “hands aren’t as steady as they used to be,” followed by what sounded like a chainsaw tearing through flesh. After this wonderful event I was given the ability to play the game! My character woke up in the darkness with only a lighter to guide him. I managed to make my way to what I thought was the exit only for it to be locked. I turned around expecting to see where I came from, of course I turn around and the exact door I was looking at appeared there as well.

(I guess I should take my meds now)

After several trippy interactions with my environment similar to the door appearing out of nowhere I finally found a clue! I had made my way into what looked like an office of sorts. On one of the tables was a note. The handwriting was pretty terrible (even worse than mine) so I could barely read it. Thankfully, a woman’s voice read what was on the note. After finding several notes such as this one, I determined people from my character’s past had left these. Some of these notes seemed to be left for him to discover. Unfortunately after reading these notes, especially some of the girl’s, I realized whatever was happening here was incredibly messed up.

(I don't think this is the way out)

As I progressed, trying not to think of the horrible past this place had within it, I encountered something incredibly interesting. The girl who had written the majority of notes had left me a tape to watch! I wasn’t exactly sure what was going to be on it, however, I knew that it would point me in the right direction to go. Without any delay, I ran off into the unforgiving darkness in search of this key to my escape. En route I encountered something that caused me to make my character take an immense amount of pills that for some reason keep him from going insane. Behind a closed door stood what I can only describe as a cross between a zombie and Imhotep from the movie The Mummy. It essentially looked like a zombie from the back. The second it turned to face me however, it unleashed a bloodcurdling scream as it’s mouth expanded to the size of it;s face. “No thank you sir!” I yelled as I proceeded to slam the door in his face and sprint in the direction I had just came from.

(Oh, what's up bro)

After finding the tape eventually and putting into the VHS player, I discovered that girl hid something! I made my way to the location in the video where she was and found an air vent. Inside was a flashlight, some batteries, those make “me not die” pills, and a keycard so that I could move on. I made my way to a door that required the key card. Not too long after this I wound up being in some weird place surrounded by red curtains. A familiar voice from the notes I had found kept talking to me. I put two and two together and I realized that this was the voice of the guy from the beginning of the game. I would end up coming to this creepy curtain world again and again over the course of the game.

(I don't think I like where this is going)

On one of my many red curtain world visits, I ended up encountering several copies of what looked like someone in a hazmat outfit. If one of them caught me it would result in my death. After making my way through a maze of these hazmat guards I finally reached the end of the line. I heard that voice again, turning to see a hazmat guy walking towards me. He extended his hand out to me, in his hand was a revolver. I was unsure of what exactly was going on, but I was fairly certain that he wanted me to use it to kill myself. I of course was unable to decline his gift and had to take the revolver, sending me spiraling back to the originally place I was trapped in.

(Sorry, the elevator is full)

I still have yet to complete Hektor, but I must say, I’m really excited for the conclusion of this game. The ambiance, the sounds, and the story are fantastic. For myself, a game like this with the story being told in the foreground is amazing. It leaves you wanting to know more and in this case to discover the dark secrets of Hektor. If you like horror games at all I suggest that you play this game. It’s an absolutely chilling and mesmerizing experience, and I’m dying to see what it all culminates to in the end.
