Looking Through My Mind's Eye

I stood in the darkness frantically lighting matches, I could barely see ten feet in front of me. Off in the distance I heard muffled footsteps. As they drew closer my heart began to race. My matches were constantly dying as the footsteps grew louder and louder. I heard a whisper behind me, “Hey!” I turned to see a horrible creature as it attacked me. I was immediately awakened in my bed, and all of the previous events seemed to be a dream. Mind’s Eye is a short horror game that sent shivers down my spine. The horrible nightmare it set me in was nerve wracking and terrifying. Despite some minor bugs, I found that it was one of the scariest games I’ve ever played. The best part is it’s free on Steam!

(What's up dude?)
Play begins by being told by some unknown presence that you need to wake up. As I played the game, I started to piece together that the person you are playing as is in a coma, and on top of that you're trapped in a nightmare. I wandered about the small house that the game is set in frantically looking for answers. There were several clues lying around, but before I knew it, strange things began to happen. The lights flickered, doors slammed, fire alarms went off, and chairs stacked themselves. I could already tell that I had some evil spirit on my hands, and I knew it wouldn’t go easy on me.

(Who turned that light on?)
The first time the power went out, I was sent into a panic. I found the nearest corner and began to light my matches. After I regained my cool and told the ghost to go to hell a couple of times I ventured from my safe haven. I tried to hit some light switches, but unfortunately they did not work. I searched through the rooms with hardly any visibility, the whole time fearing what was messing with me. I ended up going through a door in the bedroom that for some reason led to a weird room with a fuse box in it. Thankfully this fuse box only had a lever on it so I switched it on and there was light.

(Looks like someone decided to redecorate)
I made my way back out into the hallway, hitting every light back on as I did. I turned the corner of the hallway to see the creepy guy who attacked me standing there laughing. I proceeded to turn tail and run. Continuing on it became worse and worse. Lights began to shatter, there were terrifying sounds coming from everywhere, I didn’t know if it could get worse. Of course, I was wrong. The power shut off again, “This should be an easy fix,” I said as I raced back to the the fuse box. To my dismay, when I arrived I found that the lever was missing. I couldn’t believe it -- this was certainly the end. I lit a match and slowly made my way out into the hallway, I wasn’t sure where this creepy guy was, but I knew he was close. I made my way slowly through the house, using countless matches along the way. After getting startled half a dozen or so times from creepy noises, I finally found it --the switch.

(What's up dude
It was lying in the middle of the hallway. I looked around a few times, making sure that that I wasn’t about to be ambushed. The coast was clear, for now. I turned back and smashed E to pick it up, and sprinted back to the room as fast as possible. I put the switch back in and once again, there was light. I couldn’t believe I was ok, I went back out of the room, and once again I heard that voice, “Hey!” I stood frozen in place, my heart racing. I slowly moved my mouse, turning back to where the voice emanated. There was the creepy guy, poking his head through a door that appeared out of nowhere. The door slammed, and as I went to open it I discovered it was locked. I turned back again and walked away, I was safe at least. Suddenly, I heard a door open, once again I looked back, the door was wide open in front of me. I slowly walked towards the bright opening in the door, and stepped through to what could very well have been my demise.

(You never know what's gonna come through that door)
I had an absolute blast playing Mind’s Eye. There were certainly several bugs that detracted from the game, but besides that it was a fantastic playthrough. It had me on edge the entire time, I was constantly unsure of what would come next, and on several occasions I almost fell out of my chair from jumpscares. The game itself was short -- it only took me around 40 minutes to beat -- but it felt like exactly the right length to me. I have to admit this game scared me more than I have been in quite sometime. I highly recommend playing it since It’s free, and isn’t a huge commitment time-wise since it takes under an hour to complete. Free indie horror’s like Mind’s Eye give me faith in the genre. With so many mediocre horror games pouring out like tidal waves after the release of Slender, I wasn’t sure if there could be good free games anymore. However, Mind’s Eye surprised me, and had me on an adrenaline filled rush from start to finish.
